Regroup required after bad day at the office!
Matt Cooke reports......
A big wake up call was delivered by Heathcoat to the 1st X1 this weekend. Sidmouth appeared shell shocked as they were reduced to 4 for 2 after 4 overs with both Devon Captain Josh Bess and Matt Cooke back in the pavilion. A lack of application with the bat meant wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the 31.5 overs the team managed occupy at the crease. All the more disappointing was captain Luke Bess had won the toss and opted to bat on what can only be described as an absolute belter of a wicket. The one and only highlight of the Sidmouth innings was Cobras star Aviwe Mgijima starting to acclimatise and get use to English conditions with a well made 33 before running down the wicket to off spinner Jackson Thompson and being stumped by ex-Sidmouth gloveman Pete Randerson.
Defending 93 was an impossible task, however when Josh Bess removed Heathcoat opener Toby Lochead with short pitched delivery down the leg side there appeared to be a glimmer of hope. Bess with his tail up then removed the other opener as Heathcoat were reduced to 11 for 2. Professional Jackson Thompson counter punched with a flurry off boundaries off both Zak and Josh to progress the score to mid 30s before edging a full pitched delivery from Josh to Sidmouth keeper Robbie Powell. There were no further twists in the tail of this game however as Jack Dart and Heathcoat Captain Randerson showed the application that the Sidmouth batters lacked to see their team over the line in just 20.5 overs.
The 1st X1 now have to regroup as they currently are placed 4th in the Premier Division standings, with a trip to newly promoted Hatherleigh for next weekends league fixture. With only one person in the side with a 50 to their name so far, Sidmouth will welcome back Liam Lewis with open arms and hope that he can rediscover his 2016 form, likewise with the rest of the batters.
