Runs galore as Sidmouth pass 300
All Wright for Honiton but Sidmouth have Moore
TIGHT bowling and keen fielding to follow some prolific batting enabled Sidmouth 3rd XI to record a 165-run victory over Honiton 2nd XI and maintain the pace at the top of F Division East.
Had it not been for the brutal hitting of Harry Wright, coming in at number nine for Honiton, the margin would have been higher.
Wright, taking a liking to Luke Raistrick
's wrist spin, warmed up with a dot ball and a two before unleashing five consecutive fours and a six. Failing to score off his ninth delivery, he then launched a six and two more fours. He calmed down after this salvo, but still finished with 59 off 26 balls, taking his side from 56-7 to 130-8.
Prior to Wright's arrival, Raistrick had taken 2-10 in four overs. His next two overs went for 38. Fellow bowlers escaped the lash, Graham Munday
sending down four maidens in his six-over spell to finish with 1-10 after opening bowlers Lee Clayden
and Toby Seldon
had kept the lid on the runs and and shared four wickets. Clayden, and later Wesley Holmes
, benefited from Thomas Moore
Three fielders, Jash Patidar
, Ben Sapiecha
and Louis Adey
, each held two catches.
accounted for Wright and, with Wesley Holmes
, mopped up the tail to leave Honiton 143 all out.
They had faced a daunting challenge, needing to score at nearly eight an over to match Sidmouth's 308-8.
Opening batsman Moore set the tone with 88 off 56 balls, featuring in stands of 84 for the first wicket with Patidar, who made 20, and 61 with Sapiecha, who glued the innings together after two wickets fell on 145, with 63.
To illustrate what a leveller cricket is, Adey, scorer of a century in his last appearance two weeks previously, was bowled third ball for a duck.
, with 31, and Holmes, with an unbeaten 25, kept the runs flowing and Seldon got the total past 300 with 15 off seven balls.
For Honiton braces of wickets were taken by Wright, Phil Tansley, Andy Brinsford and Alan Ostler.
Sidmouth are away at Bradninch in their next match.
